In July of 2019, Make it Mariko teamed up with our nonprofit partner Kultivate Labs and won a $250K grant from the Mayor’s Office of Housing and Community Development (MOHCD) to plan a series of pop up events to strategize for a future Filipino American Arts & Culture Center, Balay Kreative. We’ve been hard at work strategizing for this project as well as going through a series of community trainings called “Trauma Informed Systems” work so that we can better serve our entire community. As summer draws to a close, we want to take a look back at one of our favorite events and collaborations – Undiscovered SF at Sunday Streets! What an incredible day out in the sun! Bluxome Street Fair was greeted by a clear sky and great energy on Sunday October 14th.
Recently we helped our client, Alexandria Real Estate, to launch a new community center on Bluxome Street as part of their community outreach plan. To celebrate the launch of the new center, along with the amazing Bluxome Street businesses, we partnered with Plinth Agency to come up with a NEW event called Bluxome Street Fair. Neighboring businesses and even the fire station opened up shop and showcased their goods and services. Many of our community partners also joined us with booths along the street, including San Franciscans for Sports and Recreation, Bay Area Science Festival, Getaround, Hellofresh, and Xfinity.Read More
It’s been a month since the inaugural Entrepinays Summit happened, and I’m still feeling the energetic after-effects of this momentous day. The day after the event happened, I posted something to Facebook expressing pure JOY, happiness, inspiration, and just AWE at the beauty of the event and more importantly, the PINAYS who were a part of it.
This day was truly POWERFUL. Gathering 130 FILIPINA women, Pinay entrepreneurs & aspiring entrepreneurs in one room at Covo, grounded in sisterhood and #pinayism, grounded in love and openness, and with the sole purpose of building community and lifting each other up. WOW. As it was happening and especially after, I had a feeling in my gut that this day was going to be a DEFINING MOMENT in my life. I’m still confident that is the case.Read More

When I was introduced to the movement around SOMA Pilipinas by my friend Desi Danganan about a year ago, I knew I had to get involved. I had just launched Make it Mariko a few months back, and was ready to get back involved with the community especially rallying around Filipino entrepreneurs. So I offered to help produce a “launch party” for SOMA Pilipinas as a way to help spread the word about the district and get people excited and proud. I knew I’d be in for some work, but had no idea how much work…
We eventually came up with the idea for the Creative Night Market based on the vibrant night markets in Asia and we started to see this beautiful concept coming to life, with an amazing team of Filipino entrepreneurs and #Entrepinays. We worked hard for the next year on the concept: raising money, finding sponsors, getting permits, and making it real.
