If we could sum up Make it Mariko’s 2023 in one word, I would say it was WILD. It felt like a giant roller coaster with so many unexpected twists & turns, drops that knocked the wind out of me, and also thrilling pockets of joy & connection. As a small business, it was incredibly hard due to ever-shifting goalposts, staffing challenges, cash flow issues, and lower event budgets partnered with higher expectations.Read More

What a roller coaster year of emotions 2020 has been. In January, we started off the year by losing one of our team members – Marco Jastillana – and could sense that it was going to be a rough one in general. Only to arrive in March to a worldwide pandemic and Shelter-in-place order. The entire live events industry was shut down, and we lost 81% of all our income.
I had no idea what was to come of Make it Mariko, but we weren’t going to sit around and wait to find out. We pivoted quickly with our event partners at AddVirtual, and started producing virtual events in April. It’s been a crazy adventure since then with hardly any breaks.
We planned 48 events in 2020
(a 17% increase from last year)!
27 were Virtual events.
Now in December, instead of having to shut down our business, I’m SO GRATEFUL to say that we’re celebrating our 5-Year Anniversary for Make it Mariko! I know that many others in the events industry weren’t so lucky, and for that, I have nothing but endless GRATITUDE for our Clients, Event Partners, and Vendors who stood by our side, referred us for virtual events, and helped this ALL WOMEN-OF-COLOR SMALL BIZ THRIVE!
Here’s a countdown of some of our favorite magical, meaningful moments in true Make it Mariko form. ENJOY 🙂
With endless gratitude, joy, and hope,
Founder & Owner
When our corporate client reached out to us early last year with their hopes of upping their holiday party game – we were excited to take it on! The attendees last year had a colorful and sweet experience around a Willy Wonka themed party. So we were excited to take on the challenge of maintaining a wow factor of being transported to another place, while bringing a different design look and feel. We came up with this Mad Scientist theme that we felt spoke to their specific employee audience really well! Here’s the custom lookbook we created for them:Read More

When Erica from Malbon Golf contacted us earlier this year talking about planning TWO cocktail parties at the golf US Open in Pebble Beach, we were stoked for the challenge! They had rented the BEAUTIFUL spanish inspired Villa Nalmaa in Pebble Beach for the entire week and were partnering with amazing brands to host kick ass cocktail parties like the US Open had never seen — music pros Beats By Dre and golf knitwear brand Lyle & Scott. Not to mention that Malbon Golf on it’s own was a really well-known and influential brand with a mission to inspire the younger generation to get into golf again. Read More
We were stoked to be able to produce YEAR TWO of the Marketplace Conference San Francisco! Just like last year, we worked with Dan Hoffer, Partner at Autotech Ventures, to design, create, and produce the conference and expand it this year. We love working with Dan as he’s always super kind, upfront with his feedback, and data driven. And his speaker curation is so on point! It makes for a great client, as I’m sure a really great venture capitalist as well 🙂
This year Dan brought on a new co-organizer, the well connected and respected Battery Ventures, to add to the list of other Organizers: Autotech Ventures in Silicon Valley and Speedinvest from Berlin. Read More
